How much should I expect to pay for real gold or white gold body jewelry?
Rhinestone Fly Brooch

Now I know it clearly depends on quality and stuff.. but obviously if I'm paying too little I'll know it's not good quality and I don't want to overpay. I'm looking for a Gold (preferably white gold) 14gauge 5/8" or 9/16" straight...

Try ebay, I know to be skeptical, but if the person has a bunch of feedback then they are probably legit. I bought one from a seller that only sold jewelry and I made sure it was stamped, it was only $15. Not too bad. I also use implant grade jewelry when I can. Thats a little more expensive...

Bishop Finn’s lack of accountability

Thank you, Bishop Finn, for coming to Christ the King Parish — like a thief in the night — to say Mass last Saturday afternoon. Too bad you didn’t make it a little earlier to hear confessions, since there was no one else to do it.

I would have to wonder what sudden revelation of “credible reports” prompted you to so abruptly dismiss Father Tierney, since quite recently, I believe, he was being stoutly defended (6/3, A1, “Church’s priest removed over sex allegation; KC parish’s pastor was accused in 2010 lawsuit of groping boy in ’71.”).

Either you sent us a priest about whom you had suspicions, or you threw him to the wolves in an effort to appear to be doing the “right” thing. This is not the definition of a good shepherd.

Thank you for giving non-Catholics more ammunition to point out the shortcomings of the Catholic Church. I must say that I am beginning to believe that they may have a point.

Grace Borgmeyer

Kansas City

This weekend, Bishop Finn directed that a letter be read at all Masses. It can be read on the Catholic Key’s blog at http://catholickey.blogspot. com.

Christ, who was blameless in his life, took the ultimate individual and personal responsibility for the wrongs of humanity. In this he set an example and asked us to “come follow” him. Unfortunately, the Bishop’s message opens with, “These past few weeks all of us have endured the consequences of our human failure. The destructive sins of a few and the serious lapses in communication have caused us shame, anger, and confusion.”

His letter continues to speak in terms of “us,” “we” and “our.” The message is devoid of an assumption of personal responsibility for any personal failing. In this, Bishop Finn falls woefully short of the example of Christ.

It causes one to wonder if the letter had to pass muster with the Diocese insurers and attorneys. It certainly did nothing to instruct, lift the spirit or give faith to the future.

Peter M. Schloss

Kansas City

My husband owns his own business. He told me that a woman employee informed him that a co-worker made a lewd comment about a body part of hers. My husband immediately went to that employee and fired him on the spot.

Bishop Finn should not be allowed to resign. He should be fired.

Laura O’Brien

Kansas City

Star editorial from outside looking in

The Star does not let the Catholics of northwest Missouri choose the members of the newspaper’s editorial board. So why should The Star’s board claim the right to decide who is fit to lead the Diocese of Kansas City-Saint Joseph?

The reason is only too clear. The Star has disagreed with Bishop Finn’s championing of the faith in the public arena. Had they been more charitable with those who disagree with it about issues of human dignity and life, then its call for his resignation might carry some weight (not much, but some).

Mike Lehr

Wichita

Rightful prosecution of Bradley Manning

As a veteran of Vietnam, I think Army Pfc. Bradley Manning should prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law if anything he disclosed put other servicemen and women at greater risk than they already were. (6/5, Local, “Manning’s supporters march; They’re looking to mobilize a larger movement to defend a man they consider a whistleblower.”)

Loose lips sink ships.

Dennis Tabel

Overland Park

Hospital Hill Run too disruptive to streets

Those of us working in Midtown once again were blockaded from getting to our jobs on Saturday due to the massive city shutdown for the Hospital Hill Run.

While we are all for charity, bringing the entire city to a standstill to benefit the 7,600 or so runners is unfair to local residents and visitors in town to attend other events.

I was shunted from one intersection to another for almost an hour from 39th St. to 75th St., and every officer I asked gave me wrong information about where to cross.

Later at work, I heard from out-of-town visitors how frustrating they found it as well. Many were trying to get to other events downtown or in Midtown, where they got lost

Something needs to be done to make sure life goes on for everyone else on race day next year, instead of just paralyzing the city for three hours of important weekend time.

Lisakay Shively

Shawnee

Foundation’s work for children, nation

The Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation’s mission is to encourage the spiritual, moral, intellectual and physical development of children through education. The foundation was formed in 1995 by former Marines and law enforcement personnel, one of whom happens to be an old friend of mine by the name of Dick Torykian. Dick is currently vice chairman.

The organization’s board includes former commandant of the Marine Corps Charles Krulak and Congressional Medal of Honor winner Harvey C. “Barney" Barnum.

The foundation has distributed close to $50 million since 1995, primarily to the children of Marines or federal law enforcement personnel who were killed on duty or died under extraordinary circumstances while serving our country at home or abroad. Numerous other examples are listed on the website of the foundation, www.mc-lef.org. The website also lists ways to contribute.

Incidentally, over 95 percent of all money contributed provides scholarships for higher education for these children. The unpaid board does so with only one part-time employee.

The foundation depends on public donations to continue its work.

Bill Wood

Overland Park

Questioning intrinsic worth of gold

I understand that in theory gold should have more value than cash, and it does seem like most things should be more valuable than the paper we use as currency (6/5, A1, “Gold’s hold on America; Businesses, individuals and politicians are increasingly turning to gold as a safeguard against inflation and a way to strengthen the dollar. But some experts think they might be headed for a fall.”)

But riddle me this: What can you really do with gold that makes it of value today? I am pretty sure in times of economic crisis nobody really cares about making or wearing jewelry.

As far as gold is concerned, you can’t eat it, drink it, drive it or live in it. It doesn’t cure illness. You can wear it, but if you are on the streets, homeless, starving to death, or dying of thirst, looking good in gold is not going to help you much.

In large quantities gold is also hard to transport. So ultimately people would just acquire it to trade it for something of real value.

I am having a difficult time seeing the sense in all of that. Cash is still king, no matter how “worthless” it is becoming.

Ryan Welch

Olathe

Government must boost cash, demand

Most of the ideas currently advanced to create jobs, as in the June 4 front-page story “No lack of ideas to create jobs,” are just nibbling at the edges of the problem.

I know it is unpopular right now to talk about solutions that involve spending more public money. Congressional Republicans are hell-bent on cutting federal spending.

The unemployment problem is a lack of hiring in the private sector and terminations in the public sector. A very large percentage of our economy comes from consumer spending, and if consumers don’t have money they can’t spend it.

I am a business owner, and I know businesses don’t hire more employees unless there’s a growing demand for their goods or services that exceeds their current production capacity — period.

In February, President Barack Obama said, “American companies have nearly $2 trillion sitting on their balance sheets.” Their problem isn’t not enough money to hire — it’s diminished demand.

Republicans’ suggested incentives to buy more equipment, build more plants and hire more employees pale in comparison to there being more money in consumers’ pockets and greater demand for products and services. Right now the only source of this cash and demand is our government.

Bill Prelogar

Overland Park

Road hazards ahead?

President Obama and Senator Paul Ryan are proving politically what drivers have always known: Veer too far to the left or the right, and you are going to end up in the ditch.
